Announcements and Closures

13 Aug

We hope everyone’s having a great summer! We have a few announcements regarding visiting the archives in the near future (since we know announcements can be boring, we’ve illustrated the announcements with photos from our collection!)

First of all – it’s cold in here! I know it’s a hot summer out there in Tucson, but the Reading Room is a steady 60 degrees so if you’re coming in to do research please dress accordingly!

It feels like this outside:

Closures: We are also going to have a few changes to our schedules in the next two months. During the week of August 25th through 29th we WILL ONLY BE OPEN FROM 1:30pm to 4pm. This is because we are in the midst of migrating our catalog and need the time in the morning to do crucial work on that project.

We will also be CLOSED from September 17th through September 19th to attend a workshop on preserving A/V materials which will be a great help to us in planning for the continued preservation of hundreds of feet of audiovisual material!

Snow Days

6 Mar

While we have had an incredibly mild winter in Tucson this year, we’ve been watching coverage of the storms hitting the rest of the country with sympathy. Although we wouldn’t have minded a snow day, we’re glad to have escaped the worst of the ice and snow. It’s hard to believe it ever snowed this much in Tucson (especially when we already hit 90 degrees in February), but check out this image from our Main Photograph Collection of the U of A Main Gate after a major snowstorm in 1922.

Seven inches of snow fell in Tucson on March 12, 1922. This photo shows the U of A gate covered in snowf. Main Photograph Collection, Photo #12928. As always, if you'd like to use or reproduce an image from this blog, please contact ahsref@azhs.gov for permissions.

For those of you in the cold, snowy weather: you can gloat when you’re having a reasonable summer and we’re enduring 120+ temperatures!

Lights!

24 Feb

The Arizona Historical Society is getting a bit brighter this week! All of our lights are being replaced by better, more energy efficient ones. We’ll be working around the clock to make this a smooth transition (Night at the Museum style!), but if you come in this week you might notice some work happening. We hope you’ll excuse the mess and appreciate the new and improved lighting!
