Found It In The Archives Friday

27 Feb

In honor of Black History Month, we wanted to share an exciting find from one of our newest collections of survey maps. This is the signature of Henry O. Flipper on a survey he created of Nogales, Arizona. Henry Flipper is best known for being the first African American to graduate from the Military Academy at West Point and for serving as an officer with the 10th Cavalry. However, he also worked as a civil engineer and this is a rare example of his survey work. This map is part of the Robert Lenon Map Collection which includes Lenon’s survey work as well as historic maps Lenon collected throughout his life. A sample of the Lenon collection, including Flipper’s map, will appear in an online exhibit in July.
